I think my parents are insane. They tell me that I can't take my car to autocross because they think I will break it. So I try to earn some money to buy a project car (such as !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ). Most parents would be fine with that right? My mom said no! WTF MOM?!? I'm pretty sure that she wants me to be dependent on her and dad as long as possible. Sorry if I'm sound like a spoiled little asshole or a snarky little shit, I am just so confused as to what my parents are thinking.

You could do what my ex did when her parents said no to something car related and drive it out of state for 2 weeks.

Parents often say things they don't really mean, in my experience.

The one good thing I found out about Florida is that it doesn't matter how old you are, if you have the cash, you can buy a car and have your name on the title.

I would do that, but I don't have money... so I asked for it as an early Christmas present. Their logic just doesn't make sense

Easier to ask for forgiveness then permission.*
*I did not tell you this
P.s. Rental cars are the fastest cars.

My parents just "don't want me to get hurt". LOL they say that is why they got me a nice car (they were going to give me a 1980 Toyota Pickup until they learned that it wasn't street legal)

Are they paying for your car insurance? If yes they can veto any car purchase you want to make. They probably also don't want a project miata on their property and they also probably assume autocross is dangerous.

Oh yes (on both statements)
![]() 09/07/2014 at 15:42 |

Yes (but I would be earning the money for insurance on the miata) and yes, they think autocross is dangerous (LOL they haven't even seen one before)

Tell them you might get kidnapped by the corn people if you break down and can't fix it, because you didn't have a project to work on. Foolproof plan right there.

Frankly they also probably aren't thrilled with the idea of you driving around in a miata, to be honest they aren't the safest car. Also they probably assume that a non-running miata is just going to sit in their driveway driving down their property values. If you parents are providing you with a car and paying for you insurance then you don't really have any right to bitch. Once you move out of the house and are supporting yourself you can do what you want, until then their house, their rules.

The first 'fun' car I bought, my RX8, was actually the one my parents told me not to get, and they supported the decision in no way, share, or form.
But I was 18, in my first year of college, needed a new vehicle, wanted an RX8, and had the financing/cash to do it. So I set up the transaction, bought a plane ticket, flew to Tennessee, and drove the car home after everything checked out on it and the local dealership had inspected everything I wanted them to.
My mom told me that if it broke down and spent more than 7 days in the driveway/garage without running she would call a tow truck. Now she loves the thing and was sad to see it go when I moved out again and even was cool with me stashing my project Volvo in their garage for over a year while I slowly nursed it back to health.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that they just want what's best for you, like me mom didn't want me to get upside down in a known risky car, but sometimes if you really really know you'll be alright and have it all worked out then it's worth doing it anyways. But if you do, don't expect to be able to go to them when shit hits the fan.

We have 7 acres of land and a shed. We have plenty of room (also that Miata *supposedly* runs). My parents have long told me that if I want to do something, do it myself. So I tried to!

Great story. I just don't think my parents understand... (I want my own car)

That miata screams "stay away" to me. He's claiming 35HP over stock, but then why does he have the 1.8 conversion kit. Also if it runs and is making 35 hp over stock why is he selling it for $500? Sounds super sketchy to me.

You have to be 25 to rent a car. And I'm hoping OP isn't 25 yet.

My Dad, for reasons unknown did not want me to have a car with a manual trans. Probly because the first time he tried to teach me how, I failed miserably. So after my first car, which they helped me purchase, died I went and got my own loan, bought my own car. I was already had my own insurance tho. They took me off their's when I got my first two moving violations in one month.
Also my Dad's plan of giving me a slow, boring, automatic, sedan, to keep me out of trouble, Did not work.

I love my car, but I want something I can modify if I want and feel the satisfaction of knowing that it is my car.
![]() 09/07/2014 at 16:14 |

By not giving the reason for why they said no, I'm going with they don't want you to have two cars while living with them for space reasons. That's a valid, logical reason.

Meh, I think they are trying to "surprise" me by titling the JSW over to me when I go to college

Convince you're parents to go to an autocross, once they see what it actually is they won't have any problems with you doing it (bonus if you get one of your parents hooked so they start lusting after a Miata).

I'm trying to! The problem is time and that they don't really have an open mind towards it!

You're not even in college?
Yeah, I'm going with my answer for the real reason for not letting you get a second car.

Which is 10 fold more dangerous than the other cars you were looking at. Also 10 fold cooler.

Maybe start with a couple of YouTube videos, then move up to a real life event. Most autocross groups allow passengers and many allow non-competitors. 20-30 min is all it would take at an event to get a really good ideas of how the sport works, so if there are any close venues your parents would only have to spend a morning to make a decision.
Stay calm, be reasonable, and agree in advance to abide by their informed decision. You could also try to find someone to codrive with, that'd cut the cost and wear on your car.

Want my honest opinion?
So long as you are your parents dependent (meaning living in their house or on their dime) you just have to put up with it, and you should.
I'm sure your parents just want you to be safe with their view of safety. You only have a few more years of being under their command, so deal with it. It may suck right now, but something like autocross isn't worth burning bridges with your family over.
Had I tried to autocross at your age there's no way in hell my parents would have let me. I didn't even get a car until I was 20 and it was a hand me down. Did I ever complain? Probably, but I regret it if I did. Looking back I had it pretty damn good. Now I can do whatever I want, but what I wouldn't give to go back to not having to pay for everything myself...
My point is just enjoy yourself within your parents rules. You won't be with them forever, but you'll miss it when your older. It's only a few more years at worst, then you can do whatever you want. Autocross will still be there when you're on your own.

No you don't. Hertz at least will rent to under 25 it just costs more. I think you have to be 18 or 21 though.

Take note of your wording here...want. You want it, which is fine, but you don't need it. It's fine to come on here and rant about it but be careful about ranting about frivolous wants to your parents

Great point! I'm trying to convince my dad to come to the autocross on the 21st at yoder, but I think he is kind of hesitant... BTW one more year and I can do whatever I want!!!!

hmmm. I always thaought you had to be 25. neat.

I rented one at 22. I didn't even have to pay the under 25 fee, my dad is a Gold Club Plus member or whatever it's called and so by going on his account it was waived.
Not that it was that great, I got an impala and to this day it's the second worst car I've ever driven

nice. I do want to, at some point in time, rent a Caymen or Boxster S, or maybe a Vette. It is really hard to find rental cars with manual transmissions tho even sports cars.

Can, but maybe not should.
It depends on the situation. When I was 18 I was in college, so I had a good deal of freedom, but my parents were paying for school, paying for my cell phone, giving me some form of allowance (I think? I honestly don't remember but I didn't work during school as a freshman so I had no income). Even my junior and senior year they paid for school, I had a car provided by them with insurance paid for by them, they paid my rent junior year (maybe even senior year? I started becoming more and more independent because I had a well paying internship).
I was free to do whatever I wanted legally, but there was no way in hell I was going to risk losing all that. I strongly recommend you don't either. Once I graduated college I went totally independent. They helped me financially a few times as an adult, and I'm grateful for that, and you better believe that would have diminished had I gone all rebel when I turned 18.
Stay on their good side. Go to school. When you graduate, be a responsible adult and then exercise your freedom. Don't push your luck too early

There are no manual rentals in the Us, and you can't rent those under 25

so get the money for one and buy it, don't ask for it as a Christmas present.
